Abstract

To tackle the expanding pollution of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) which is now a global scale problem, developed countries and international organizations have come to take measures in terms of production ban or use regulation of PFCs. There are many developing countries in Asia, however, where countermeasures against PFC pollution are delayed and information on the state of PFC pollution is limited. On the other hand, the countermeasures and information are relatively abundant in Japan. Thus, we have to lead the developing countries for solving their PFC problems. Here, available information and knowledge concerning the state of PFC pollution and source are summarized, and possible measures to prevent expansion of PFC pollution in Asian countries are discussed. As some countries in Asia are speculated to become worse in terms of PFC pollution and to invite human health or ecological risks, it is highly desirable that these countries will take swift preventive measures against environmental pollution while maintaining their economic growth. For this purpose, Japan can be of assistance to these countries in many aspects, while she, herself, continues to pile multipronged information and knowledge for the effective risk management of her PFC pollution.
