Abstract

We report a rare case of thyroid metastasis from renal cell carcinoma, together with a review of the literature.
A 55-year-old man was referred to our hospital for treatment of a thyroid tumor with hematosputum and dyspnea. He had undergone right nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma 9 years earlier. Chest CT scan revealed multiple lung metastases, a thyroid tumor and an intra-tracheal tumor. On the next day, he coughed up a lump of the tumor and blood, and he was admitted to our hospital for examination and treatment.
Pathological examinations of the lump demonstrated metastatic renal cell carcinoma to the thyroid and the trachea.
He was transferred to the department of urology in our hospital, and had been administered interferon-α at a dose of 5 million units three times a week till now, February in 2009.
