Our study has proposed a method of nondestructive crack detection using the estimated centers of the cracks calculated from the magnetic field around a distribution line. A magnetic filed is distributed in a concentric pattern around a distribution line without any cracks. Therefore, all lines that are perpendicular to the magnetic field direction around such distribution line should intersect at one point, namely, the center of the distribution line. Around a distribution line with cracks, however, these lines will not intersect at one point, because of distortion in the distribution of the magnetic field. This difference can be used detection of cracks in distribution lines. It enables real-time crack detection without imposing specific restrictions on the positions of sensors and the distribution line. In this paper, we examine the optimum pair of sensors for calculating the estimated centers of cracks in order to detect cracks in a distribution line that consists of seven conductive wires. We tested with different depths of crack and considered whether the system could detect cracks automatically.
