Abstract

Objectives: The shortage of physicians is a great concern in Japan. This study aimed to elucidate the required number of physicians in Yamaguchi prefecture based on the opinions of directors of hospitals. Methods: We conducted a questionnaire survey of the directors of all hospitals in Yamaguchi Prefecture on the present number and required number of physicians by specialty in the hospital. The size of the shortage of physicians, the percentage of the shortage, and the number of urgently needed physicians in hospitals in the prefecture were estimated. Results: The directors of 119 out of 147 hospitals responded. The total numbers of present physicians, required physicians and shortage of physicians were 1593, 2202, and 609, respectively. Most specialties showed a shortage of physicians, and respiratory medicine, neurology, orthopedics, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, anesthesiology and emergency departments showed the severest shortage. Discussion: This study estimated the required number of physicians by specialty in Yamaguchi prefecture. The results of this study will contribute to strategies to suitably train, increase and allocate physicians at the local level.
