Abstract

Polymers, liquid crystals, colloids, amphiphilic molecules, and biological materials form soft interfaces. The chemical and physicochemical properties of soft interfaces control various functional properties such as wetting, adhesion, biocompatibility, tribology, and electrical properties. However, the relationships between interfacial chemistry and the functional properties of soft interfaces have not yet been clarified. In this paper, DNA-functionalized nanoparticles are focused on as a typical example of soft interfaces from the viewpoints of gene sensing, chemical sensing, ion sensing, and molecular logic gate systems.
