The presence of small amounts of boron in spheroidal graphite cast iron has been reported to cause the problem of reduction in the area ratio of pearlite and hardness of spheroidal graphite cast iron. One method to increase the area ratio of pearlite is alloying by pearlite promoting elements. The effects of adding varied amounts of chromium and vanadium to increase the pearlite in spheroidal graphite cast iron containing small amounts of boron are discussed in this paper. 0.4% chromium and 0.6% vanadium are required to regain normal mechanical properties (tensile strength and hardness) and the area ratio of pearlite. In this research, it was found that chromium addition is significantly more effective for increasing the pearlite compared to vanadium addition, and that all-pearlite matrix can achieved by adding 0.8% chromium. The presence of chromium in cementite is assumed to stabilize the cementite and increase the pearlite content. On the other hand, the addition of 0.6% to 1% chromium was found to result in the loss of boron from the surface of spheroidal graphite and in the presence of boron in cementite.
