Abstract

The purpose of our study was to investigate the factors contributing to the burnout of research associates by taking account of individual parameters and job satisfaction. Using the Japanese version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (the Japanese MBI) and a questionnaire about individual parameters, teaching aptitude and job satisfaction, we conducted a survey of 1,165 research associates in colleges of nursing in Japan. 549 (47.1%) of the 1,165 approached replied, with 528 of returned questionnaires proving valid for our study.<br> The findings revealed that 1) Burnout was not related to sex, age, number of years of clinical experience, number of years as a research associate or work position. 2) Burnout was however associated with academic background, job motivation and attending lectures in the field of teacher training. 3) Since burnout was associated with job satisfaction, we suggest that it is all-important for the individual research associate to avert burnout and realize greater job satisfaction by preparing sufficiently for her overall duties in the areas of nursing practice, supporting lectures, and social activities.
