The authors analyze the color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI) findings of the ophthalmic artery (OA) in the ischemic cerebrovascular diseases, and they discuss the usefulness of OA CDFI.
Materials and Methods: We performed OA CDFI on 108 patients. The OA flow direction, waveform and peak systolic flow velocity (PSV) were examined in each.
Results: 1) Twenty-two patients showed a reversed flow pattern (RP) . Among these, sixteen patients (73%) had internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion and the other six patients (27%) had tight ICA stenosis revealed on angiogram. The mean PSV was -0.30 m/sec in the RP patients. 2) Twenty-two patients demonstrated the arch stenotic pattern (SP) . More than 50% ICA stenosis was seen in twelve patients (55%), and ICA occlusion was seen in 18 % of cases. The mean PSV was 0.09 m/sec in the SP patients. 3) We observed a sclerotic pattern in 25 patients. Two patients showed an abnormal waveform, while thirty-seven patients showed the normal waveform. Among the 37 patients showing the normal waveform, five patients (14%) revealed more than 50% ICA stenosis on angiography. 4) The average PSV in ICA occlusion was -0.21 + 0.18 m/sec (mean + standard deviation), and the average PSV in patients with more than 50% ICA stenosis was 0.07 + 0.20m/sec (mean + standard deviation) . These values were significantly low compared to the control value (p<0.05) . Conclusion: OA CDFI shows good correlation with the angiographical occlusive findings of ICA. Most of the patients presenting with the RP or SP with low PSV on OA CDFI had severe ICA occlusive lesions.
