Objectives: It is thought that assessment of bone quality requires the evaluation of bone strength as well as bone density. Furthermore, it is recognized that bone density and strength are affected by trabecular bone structure. This study 1) evaluated the imaging range of an MRI microscopy coil when used for MR imaging of the jaw; 2) evaluated MRI sequence using a microscopy coil; and 3) attempted to assess bone quality of the jaw using an MRI microscopy coil.
Subjects and Methods: 1) Imaging range of a microscopy coil: We demonstrated an MRI phantom using three kinds of surface coil, a conventional surface coil with an inner diameter of 110 mm and a microscopy coil with an inner diameter of 47 mm and a microscopy coil with an inner diameter of 23 mm, and evaluated the imaging range.
2) MRI sequence of the microscopy coil: We evaluated the healthy jaw of a volunteer using two different MRI sequences with a microscopy coil showing an inner diameter of 47 mm.
3) Trabecular bone structure analysis of the jaw: We evaluated healthy jaws on 15 sides in eight volunteers using a microscopy coil with an inner diameter of 47 mm. We chose trabecular bone structure pattern from MR images of the jaw using a mathematical morphological filter.
Results: 1) The signal intensity of the microscopy coil was higher than that of the conventional surface coil. However, the signal area of the microscopy coil was smaller than that of the conventional surface coil and the signal intensity of the microscopy coil decreased with the distance from the surface. 2) MR images (137 × 137μm pixel size) were obtained with high resolution. However, the SNR of these images was low. 3) We were able to obtain high-resolution MR images using a microscopy coil with an inner diameter of 47 mm. We could choose the trabecular bone structure from MR images of the jaw using the mathematical morphological filter. We could calculate structural parameters for 17 feature parameters from trabecular bone structure images.
Conclusion: We were able to evaluate bone quality of the jaw using an MRI microscopy coil.
