Low vision, suppression and aniseikonia have been considered as important factors for understanding stereopsis in amblyopic patients. In order to study the relationship between artificially decreased vision and stereopsis, visual acuity under the binocular condition and near stereoscopic vision were tested in 16 normal subjects using 8 different kinds of Ryser's stepwise increasing occlusion filters on one eye or both eyes. Four types of near stereoscopic vision charts were used in this study and their results varied considerably. Our results revealed that stereoscopic vision was evaluated more precisely when solid patterns were used than when random dot was used. As to the relationship between near vision and stereoscopic vision, near-normal stereoscopic vision was maintained down to near vision of 0.3 and then it was decreased rather quickly. In the case of stereoscopic vision using TNO stereo test charts, stereoscopic vision was decreased gradually as artificially decreased near vision decreased. When near vision of both eyes was decreased equally, stereoscopic vision was obtained in lower near vision as compared with the case when near vision was decreased unilaterally. Stereopsis was obtained in lower near vision when stereoscopic charts using solid patterns were used than when charts using random dot were used. It was thus suggested that the use of stereoscopic vision charts using both solid patterns and random dot was essential in the evaluation of stereoscopic near vision.
