<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>Synthetic imogolite surface was modified with alkyl phosphate by covalent bonding from an aqueous solution, and the individual imogolite tubes with a hydrophobic external surface were directly observed with transmission electron microscopy.</jats:p>
