Abstract

The role of speech therapists(ST)in dysphagia rehabilitation has become increasingly important in recent years. Herein, we report problems related to eating and swallowing among patients with higher brain dysfunction, who have traditionally been considered difficult to treat, as well as patients with conditions such as impaired consciousness and dementia. <br>  Subsequently, we analyzed the actual condition of these problems at hospitals and other facilities by classifying data from cooperating facilities into the acute, recovery, and other phases, and elucidated differences in problems among various phases. In addition, we presented three cases of Wallenberg syndrome and indicated that cognitive impairment may greatly affect the progress of dysphagia rehabilitation as well as outcome. Finally, we identified the representative symptoms related to eating and swallowing functions that are observed in patients with conditions such as higher brain dysfunction and discussed their treatment methods.
