Abstract

In the case of organic light-emitting devices, the optical power of electric dipoles can be dissipated by many channels, such as external emission, substrate propagation, a wave-guided mode, surface plasmons, electron scattering and electron-hole excitation. As a result, optical losses are observed, resulting in an external quantum efficiency of the device as low as 20-30% in spite of a high internal quantum efficiency. Therefore, the light extraction technique is expected to make a rapid progress in organic lighting application. In this paper, we introduce a technique of analyzing and an experiment on understanding these wide-range optical phenomena systematically. The development factor and possibility towards highly efficient device design are described.
