Abstract
Emotional state which is affected by an individual driver performance is one of the factors in determining the various needs of cars. Previous studies using the measurement of psychological, behavioral, and physiological methods have focused on the emotional state which is induced by the external stimulus, on the other hand, little is known about the interferences between the individual performance and emotional changes. Here, to estimate the increase/decrease of positive emotion associated with individual driving skills, this study conducted the electroencephalograph (EEG) measurements during driving simulators. As results of questionnaires, the subjective pleasantness was significantly correlated with the accomplishment of driving, and such correlation led the fast lap times, which indicated flow experiences (Csékszentmihályi, 1975). The current study conducted linear discrimination analysis using the theta (4∼8 Hz) and alpha (9∼12 Hz) spectral powers of 9 EEG electrodes and achieved an 87% estimation of flow experiences. These results suggested that the theta and alpha activities would be a physiological index of pleasantness and accomplishment which is induced by advancements of driving skill.
