Abstract

A critical review of recent research progress in plasmonics is given on the basis of the discussion on the mechanism and functions of plasmonic materials and devices. The discussion starts with the surface mode, following the modes of thin films, the wire mode of nanorods, and the point or localized mode of nanoparticles. The distinct features of superlens and apertureless near-field scanning microscopy (tip-enhanced Raman scattering microscopy) are also discussed. The difference in antenna function between near-UV/visible/near-infrared and microwave/THz regions is given with an example, and deep UV plasmonics and innovative methods providing the resolution exceeding the limit in plasmonics are also introduced.
