Abstract

Molecular epidemiology of hepatitis A virus (HAV) is warranted. HAV isolates obtained from middle-aged couple with acute hepatitis A in Fukuoka 2010, showed 100% similarity each other in genome sequence. These HAV strains of genotype IA also indicated 98.4% homology with HAV isolates derived from a patient with acute hepatitis A infected in Borneo island 1999. Interestingly, the Fukuoka strains were also similar to the HAV isolate which was reported to be identified from a German individual, infected in the Philippines 2007. Taken together, the HAV strains circulating in South Asia may have been spreading and responsible for hepatitis A in different regions of the world.<br>
