Abstract
Inappropriate management of medical waste has recently become a problem, with more studies being conducted on the conditions surrounding this issue and more appropriate management strategies being developed. Most of these medical waste studies have, however, focused on waste generated from medical care to humans. Medical waste also includes waste generated from medical care to animals and in Japan, there are no guidelines for the handling of veterinary medical waste. Various problems arise regarding remarkable changes in the amount of veterinary medical waste when an industrial animal epidemic, such as bird flu, breaks out. To establish appropriate guidelines for veterinary medical waste management, it is essential to know the actual amount of veterinary medical wastes being generated. The purpose of this study is to make an analysis for veterinary medical wastes and then report projections regarding the situation.<br>Results show that veterinary medical waste from pets amounted to 7.7×105kg in 2010, which denotes an increase in veterinary medical waste from pets. The study predicts a reduction in this amount from around the year 2015. With regard to industrial animals, the amount of veterinary medical waste generated was at 1.34×105kg in 2009 with no break out of bird flu. When a break out of bird flu did occur, veterinary medical waste amounts reached about 1.5 times more than when there was no bird flu reported.
