Optically Controllable Transflective Fresnel Lens in Azobenzene-Doped Cholesteric Liquid Crystals Using a Sagnac Interferometer

A tunable transflective Fresnel lens is demonstrated by using an interference technique based on an azobenzene-doped cholesteric liquid crystal (AzoCLC) film. The AzoCLC film was irradiated simultaneously by ultraviolet light and one Fresnel-patterned green beam derived from a Sagnac interferometer. The linearly polarized incident beam, the wavelength of which was in the Bragg reflection band of the AzoCLC, was simultaneously transmitted and reflected from the planar textures in the binary zone plate, and constructively added and focused in the transmissive and reflective directions, respectively. Focusing efficiency was controlled by adjusting the intensity of the Fresnel-patterned green beam.
