Abstract

Strain and/or temperature applied to an optical fiber can be measured through its optical properties, such as scattering. Methods of measuring the distribution of such a property have been proposed and developed; thus, we can obtain information on the distribution of strain and/or temperature along the optical fiber. In this paper, recent progress in “fiber optic nerve systems”, which have been investigated to realize “materials and structures that can feel pain” by embedding the fiber, for example, in aircraft wings and buildings, is reviewed.
