Abstract
To investigate the effects of friction-work on fatigue properties, rotary bending fatigue tests were performed on friction-worked S45C steel specimens in laboratory air at room temperature. Tests were also conducted on electropolished specimens for comparison. The results indicated that the fatigue strength of friction-worked specimens was considerably improved compared with that of electropolished specimens. This was due to the high compressive residual stress and the work-hardened layer, which consisted of submicron grains formed on the specimen surface by friction-work. In addition, the coaxing effect appeared for friction-worked specimens as a result of stress-incremental tests.
