Abstract

Microcubes prepared from γ-cyclodextrin by the precipitation method were carbonized by heating from room temperature to 900 °C at a rate of 1 °C/min under flowing argon. The as-prepared γ-cyclodextrin microcubes were changed to a carbonaceous material with a spongy form through a softening and/or fusing process. In contrast, an I<sub>2</sub> doped γ-cyclodextrin microcube was steadily converted to a carbon microcube while retaining the shape of the starting material. This latter material had characteristics of amorphous carbon and a microporous material.
