Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analysis in a residential relocation of a purchasing own houses within the Tokyo metropolitan area using geographic information systems (GIS). An understanding of relationship between an aging society with decreasing population and urban structure has been a major focus of research in urban studies. Previous studies which attempt to explain a residential relocation in terms of aging society only to focus on a destination because of limitations in questionnaires, interviews, and case studies. Understanding a mechanism of a residential relocation within the metropolitan area under an aging society, we try to analyze not only a destination but also an origin at the same time. In this study we explored how households move from previous addresses to new addresses as the purchasing own houses using OD data.
