抄録

Generally speaking, it is difficult to use a low rank coal due to its lower heat value. However, the low rank coal can turn into a useful fuel, if it is economically dewatered and upgraded to have a higher calorific value. Besides, some of the low rank coals have characteristics of a low sulfur content and a low ash content, which are favorable for a fuel. After operations of a pilot plant (capacity of 3 t/h) as well as a demonstration plant (capacity of 600 t/h) in Indonesia, Kobe Steel has successfully developed the UBC<sup>®</sup> (Upgraded Brown Coal) process under a support of the Japanese government, which can efficiently upgrade some low rank coals. Based on data that were collected during the operations, Kobe Steel began a feasibility study of a future commercial plant.
