Abstract
Merging formation of a field-reversed configuration (FRC) was analyzed by using three-dimensional field line traces measured in TS-4 merging experiment. The magnetic field line evolution reveals ‘slingshot’ and ‘overshoot’ motion, which explain relaxation of counterhelicity merging of two spheromaks to an FRC. The sharp bending of magnetic field lines was observed near the X point, suggesting that the Hall effect in process of magnetic reconnection affects the slingshot and the overshoot.
