Methylglyoxal (MG) is a reactive aldehyde derived by glycolysis. In <I>Arabidopsis</I>, MG inhibited light-induced stomatal opening in a dose-dependent manner. It significantly inhibited both inward-rectifying potassium (K<SUB>in</SUB>) channels in guard-cell protoplasts and an <I>Arabidopsis</I> K<SUB>in</SUB> channel, KAT1, heterologously expressed in <I>Xenopus</I> oocytes. Thus it appears that MG inhibition of stomatal opening involves MG inhibition of K<SUP>+</SUP> influx into guard cells.
