Abstract

Intravenous infusion therapy (IVT) has been used for preoperative rehydration. However, oral rehydration therapy (ORT) is thought to eliminate the risks associated with intravenous infusion therapy. In our hospital, medical errors related to intravenous infusion therapy decreased significantly when oral rehydration therapy was given (IVT: 27 incidents/mo; ORT: 15 incidents/mo, P=0.0003). In addition, oral rehydration therapy simplified medical practice, which decreased the workload of physicians, pharmacists, and nurses while generating revenues (dietary medical expenses). In conclusion, oral rehydration therapy improved the safety and quality of preoperative care, increased staff members' efficiency, and provided both optimal medical therapy and economic benefits.
