Abstract

シリカは地球上で最も多く存在する元素でありながら,最も多く存在する微生物の大部分にとっては無用の長物であると思われてきた.ところが,地熱地帯で散見されるシンターと呼ばれるシリカ沈殿物や産業用施設の配管や設備に沈殿するシリカスケールなどのバイオミネラリゼーションを通じて見ると,好熱菌がシリカを巧みに利用して自身の生存を担保している様子が伺える.ここでは,好熱菌にとって無用の用をなすシリカのバイオミネラリゼーションについて紹介する.
