Abstract

In order to cultivate dental hygienists who can adapt to highly-specialized and advanced dentistry, a Master's course for oral health sciences in Kyushu Dental College is under consideration. To investigate the necessity of dental hygienists with Masterʼs degrees and the educational effect of a Master's course for oral health sciences, a questionnaire survey was carried out, targeting 362 hospitals with dentistry or oral surgery in Kyushu, Okinawa and Yamaguchi, 231 healthcare facilities for the elderly, and 361 welfare facilities for the aged in Fukuoka Prefecture. In the 369 facilities which answered the questionnaire, 323 facilities (87.5%) needed highly-specialized dental hygienists, 338 facilities (91.6%) recognized the positive effects of lectures and clinical training in the a Master's course, and 307 facilities (83.2 %) recognized the value of a Master's course being established in Kyushu Dental College. The proportion of positive answers about the expected role of dental hygiene with Masterʼs degree on investigation/study was significantly higher in hospital (51.3%) than in facility for elderly (23.6%). The proportion of positive answer about the leading role of dental hygiene with Masterʼs degree on local healthcare was significantly higher in other prefectural hospitals (71.2%) than in prefectural hospitals (41.2%) . Similarly, this proportion was higher in healthcare facilities for the elderly (65.5%) than in special elderly nursing homes (43.2%) . In conclusion, hospitals and facilities for the elderly expressed a need for the highly-qualified dental hygienists with Masterʼs degree. The expected roles of the dental hygienist with Masterʼs degree varied according to the facility.
