Abstract

The purpose of this study is to give a quantitative assessment of environmental impacts of decreasing transportation distance by applying “local production for local consumption” policy. We estimated transportation patterns to minimize CO₂ emission from transportation of 14 items of vegetables. The result shows that 10.1% of CO₂ emission, which is equal to 70,000ton, can be reduced. Especially, this policy is more effective for Kanto and Kyushu, because it reduces the amount of long-distance trade between these two regions. Also, fruit vegetables and leaf vegetables show high reduction rate.
