Abstract

In this study, we synthesized N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone-methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid terpolymer sodium salt [P(VP-MMA-MA), 7] by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and methyl methacrylate followed by hydrolysis in 0.10 mol/L NaOH aqueous solution. Magnetite nanoparticles that were coated with 7 [P(VP-MMA-MA)-MNPs, 8] were prepared by thermal decomposition of iron pentacarbonyl in the presence of 7 in DMF under reflux. The iron concentration of 8 were 1.0–8.7 wt% in dry weight of nanoparticles. P(VP-MMA-MA)-MNPs solutions remained stable for several months without noticeable precipitation. TEM images of 8 showed that the average size of magnetite core were 10–20 nm. DLS measurements revealed that hydrodynamic diameter of 8 were 200–270 nm in phosphate buffered saline. MTT assay on macrophage cell line RAW 264.7 indicated neglectable cytotoxicity of 7 and 8. Finally, we confirmed that 8 generated heat in an alternating magnetic field. This study suggests that P(VP-MMA-MA)-MNPs are useful materials for MRI contrast enhancement and hyperthermia treatments.
