For a better understanding of a deformity named body curvature of Japanese flounder, we conducted morphological observations, and evaluated genetic variability and parentages using microsatellite DNA markers. Twenty-seven individuals from broodstocks were used for the seed production, and 40 normal and 53 body curvature individuals were collected at 58 days-post-hatch. From morphological observations, abnormal formations of neural and haemal spines were observed in curvature individuals. There were no obvious differences in heterozygosity or allele frequencies between normal and curvature individuals based on microsatellite DNA analysis. Results of a parentage analysis indicated that normal individuals were generated from 7 female and 10 male broodstocks, and 20 parental pairs were observed. Curvature individuals were generated from 5 female and 9 male broodstocks, and 17 parental pairs were observed. No broodstocks or couples generated significant numbers of curvature individuals. Our results suggest that the body curvature individuals assessed in this research had arisen via environmental factors rather than genetic factors.
