Abstract

Microfl uidics and photonics are combined synergistically to form the fi eld referred to as “optofl uidics”. We herein reviewed the various techniques for the integration of optical elements into the microfl uidic device. Although optofl uidics involves integration of optics technique with fl uid-related technique, the basic technology for handling fl uid fl ow and light fl ow often differs. In this review, we introduce the device compositions of on-chip waveguide, tunable fl uidic lens, and color-space-time coding method using spatial and color fi lters, and also summarize the features of these techniques, such as high F-value and higher reliability attributed to fewer composition parts. The fusion of microfl uidics and optics could make simultaneous multiple measurements possible through single operation, a key factor that identifi es the usefulness of a device.
