Abstract

Amphiphilic compounds can aggregate to form micelles with various structures in aqueous solutions. Especially cationic lipids can complex with DNA, therefore they are expected to work as gene carriers for drug delivery systems (DDS). However, it is difficult to control the structures of micelles. In this study, we synthesized a cationic lipid with C12 alkyl chain and measured the structure of the micelles with small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) at various pH. SAXS showed a structural transition from cylinder to lamellar structure between low pH and high pH. We confirmed these results by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). These results proof that this cationic lipid undergoes a pH dependent structural transition.
