8-Hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ)-dispersing titania gel films were prepared through a nitric acid-catalyzed sol–gel process and steam treatment. The complex was formed between the 8-HQ and the titania nanoparticle surface. A photocurrent was observed in electrodes containing the complex due to electron injection from the excited state of the complex into the titania conduction band. A larger amount of the complex was formed in titania electrodes containing zinc ions owing to its high electron affinity.
