Abstract

Purpose: Vortex flow has been known to aid effective left ventricular filling. Left ventricular vortex in diastole can be assessed with newly developed echodynamography based on color Doppler information. We evaluated the effect of hemodynamics on the vortex. Subjects and Methods: We measured the maximal flow, area, intensity, and position of the vortex in diastole using echodynamography along with hemodynamics in eight open chest dogs before and after esmorol (250 μg/kg/min) and dobutamine (5.0 μg/kg/min) infusion. Left ventricular inflow velocity was measured by pulsed Doppler echocardiography. Results: The maximal flow and the area decreased with esmorol and increased with dobutamine; therefore, the intensity did not change significantly. The maximal flow showed a significant correlation with left ventricular early diastolic inflow velocity but not with other indexes such as left ventricular systolic and end-diastolic pressures, tau and±dP/dt. Conclusion: Left ventricular vortex in diastole is affected by left ventricular inflow dynamics.
