Abstract

A 58-year-old man, suspected to have a cyst of appendix vermiformis, was admitted to our hospital. After we carried out colonoscopy, ultrasonography, computed tomography, and positron emission tomography, the existence of appendiceal mucocele was demonstrated. Laparoscopy-assisted ileocecal resection with regional lymph nodes dissection (D3) was performed. During the surgery, we have accomplished “non touch technique” by medial approach and used ENDOPOUCH RETRIEVER to catch appendiceal mucocele. The final pathological diagnosis revealed the tumor to be low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm. It is necessary to perform the surgery against this neoplasm by tremendously protectable technique. Therefore, we concluded that laparoscopic surgery is one of the acceptable technique for appendiceal mucocele without pseudomyxoma peritonei. Appendiceal mucocele is a rare disease, and there is a risk of pseudomyxoma peritonei. Herein we report a case of appendiceal mucocele and discuss about five cases treated in our hospital with some literature reviews.
