Abstract

As a result of the examination of 26 interspecific mixtures of 12 dictyostelid species, 12 mixtures showed some irregular phenomena among aggregating pseudoplasmodia. In 6 of them, including a mixture of Polysphondylium pallidum and P. violaceum, mutually overlapping pseudoplasmodia were found. In other 3,including a mixture of Dictyostelium delicatum and D. minutum, secondary pseudoplasmodia of D. minutum were sometimes observed to overlap the pseudoplasmodia of counterpart species. In the other 3 mixtures, i.e., Acytostelium sp.-1 and A. sp.-2,D. delicatum and P. violaceum, and D. microsporum and P. violaceum, abnormal pseudoplasmodia composed by the pairs were found. Such abnormal pseudoplasmodia were found in the mixture of D. delicatum and D. minutum besides overlapping pseudoplasmodia. These findings suggest that 1) P. pallidum may respond to a chemical substance different from the acrasin of P. violaceum, 2) the acrasin of D. delicatum, D. microsporum and D. minutum may be identical with or closely related to that of P. violaceum, and 3) in D. minutum, the acrasin promoting the primary pseudoplasmodia may differ from the chemical substance conducting the secondary ones.
