The density, thermal expansion and transition and softening temperatures of alkaline earth germanate glasses of the system <special>MO-GeO2</special>, where M is Ca, Sr and Ba, were measured. Addition of 3 mol% <special>Al2O3</special> made it possible to form glasses without crystallization on cooling the melt. The so called germanate anomaly was observed on the property-composition curves. Coordination of <special>Ge4+</special> ions in those glasses was discussed on the basis of molar volumes and infrared absorption spectra and compared with that in alkali germanate glasses of the system <special>R2O-GeO2</special>, where R is Li, Na and K. Addition of <special>Al2O3</special> did not essentially affect the coordination of <special>Ge4+</special> ions. The concentration of 6-fold coordinated <special>Ge4+</special> ions <special>N6</special> of <special>MO-GeO2</special> glasses changed with the MO content X, following the formula <special>N6</special>=X/(100-X) as in <special>R2O-GeO2</special> glasses. The maximum <special>N6</special> of about 20% was attained in the glass containing about 25 mol% MO in the <special>MO-GeO2</special> system, while the maximum <special>N6</special> was situated at 15-20 mol% <special>R2O</special> in <special>R2O-GeO2</special> glasses.
