@@@The dawning year of the 21st Century saw the United States shaken by coordinated terrorist attacks on its major centers and anthrax bio-terrorism. The government of Japan quickly followed the United Kingdom in promising to support military retaliation. Amidst this "retaliation" mood, it is worthwhile to refresh our memories of pacifist journalist Yūyū Kiryū (1873-1941), who passed away in September 1941. A reporter who had worked in Osaka, Tokyo, Nagano and Nagoya, Kiryu wrote an editorial entitled "Laughing at the Great Kanto Air Defense Exercise" while editor-in-chief of the Shinano Mainichi Shimbun, then was forced to resign. He published the semi-monthly private journal, Tazan no Ishi ("Food for Thought") for eight years while in his 60's, but announced discontinuation three months before the start of the U.S.-Japan war. In his announcement of discontinuation, he noted, "While I welcome that we are disappearing from the face of an Earth about to fall into the Path of Bestiality, I yet have strong regret that we are departing without sight of the massive postwar disarmament long dreamed of." (A portion adjusted for modern readers.) Immediately following the 9.11 attacks, the President of the United States called for attacks by "cowboys" and "Crusaders." These cheap words show that our "Earth (on) the path of Bestiality" is not yet moving towards disarmament.
