Introduction : This paper presents the preliminary findings of research on a Korean hostess club in Minami, Osaka. It explores the following questions: where Korean hostess clubs are located; how a Korean hostess club operates; how they influence the Korean community; who works there (focusing on their visa status); what kind of work is assigned to each worker; how much it costs to patron the Korean hostess club; and what the staffs' income is. This is based on detailed ethnographic data of the hostess' daily lives in Minami. The workspace of the hostess clubs allows me to observe a significant number of Korean hostesses and Korean male staff as well as multi-ethnic clients such as Japanese, resident Koreans, Koreans, other Asians and Westerners. ……
