The purpose of this study was to explore coping behaviors of 2 to 6 year-old children during venipunctures at a pediatric out-patient unit. 33 venipunctures with 28 children were observed and the following results were found. 1. As the process of a venipuncture proceeded, children's coping behaviors decreased. 2. The coping behaviors most frequently observed during the whole process of a venipuncture were self-protective behaviors. Especially, visual examination was used most often in all phases. 3. Coping behaviors of 4 to 6 year-old children during venipunctures were more frequent and more various than those of 2 to 3 year-old children. 4. Children who participated in venipunctures with independent attitudes did not cry in all phases.
