The independence and autonomy of learners should highly be respected in order to bring up the strength for striving of learners. In Japan there have the philosophy for respecting the learners' independence and autonomy existed since the present educational system was set up. However, there have been no ages that we seriously discuss that theme. In such a trend quite a few teachers have been doing the learner centered teaching, but they tend to give priority to formality. The quest for what 'respecting the learners' independence and autonomy' is has been neglected for a long time. In this paper, focusing upon the concept of 'how to learn', we tried to prove that it can be an answer to what the fundamental philosophy and principle of the Association is, if we could reveal the principles of the Association that have kept the position in which the learner' independence and autonomy was highly respected since the Association started. We did some surveys utilizing the previous studies and literatures done by the leaders of 'Japan Research Association of Learning Methodology'. It has been said that 'how to learn by 'Japan Research Association of Learning Methodology' is one of the ways of learning. But our research results show that the way of learning advocated and proposed by the Association is the educational ideal and concept which involves various kinds of learning contents.
