Abstract

The purpose of this study was to reveal the adaptation process of demented elderly patients when they were admitted to a nursing home, and how nurses and care workers saw the adaptation. We observed 3 demented elderly patients for a week after they were admitted to the nursing home. In addition, we surveyed sleep and waking rhythms and activity quantity. We interviewed three nurses and six care workers who worked in the nursing home using a semi-structured questionnaire at the end of the period. Two demented elderly patients whom we observed showed agitation and aggressiveness at first. They then could be calmed down gradually with suitable care. The other demented elderly patient found his role in the nursing home and showed subjectivity gradually. The results of the interview showed that nurses and care workers grasped adaptation from 11 viewpoints. These were expressions of the face or eyes, mood, decrease in or end of troublesome behaviour, increase of interchange with others, finding their role, the establishment of trust, the dawn of spontaneousness, a decrease in or disappearance of physical symptoms, the establishment of their whereabouts, the establishment of daily life. The results of this study suggested that nurses and care workers make an effort to understand elderly patients and to find suitable care for them especially in the first month.
