Abstract

In this paper, the structures and functions of personal networks of women during the childrearing stage are explored, using survey data collected in a local city. Findings are as follows : 1. The parents of respondents and their husbands live close by. 2. Non-kin associates who are on good terms with respondents also tend to live close by, i. e., various kinds of friends acquired across the life stages accumulate near their place of residence and form multistory support networks. 3. The relations with these non-kin associates have distinctive attributes and provide distinctive kinds of support according to the contexts of how they got to know each other. Based on these findings, problems of childrearing networks of mothers in a local community can be identified.
