Teaching thinking skills in mathematics courses in high school may usually implicate a type of lesson in which teacher gives students a problem, for which there is no specific algorithmic rule leading up to an automatic solution. Perhaps because this type of lesson appears to be too demanding to teachers as well as to students, teachers, understandably, tend to avoid dealing with it in the classroom, while students remain only perplexed in face of such a task. However, as recent research in the field of brain science suggests, thinking skills are not necessarily complex higher-order problem solving skills, but rather involved in apparently lower-order skills, such as speaking. The present paper puts forward a syllabus for teaching thinking skills in mathematics courses, whereby an attempt is made to illustrate several learning activities for enhancing brain functioning on the basis of recent findings in the field.
