Abstract

The object of this paper is to yield a deeper insight into influential factors on a sudden rise in the suicide rate in Toyama Prefecture focusing on the middle-age men who might contribute mainly to this rate in Toyama Prefecture. They were analyzed from three points (peculiar properties as the middle-age men and also as the peoples in Toyama Prefecture, and social situation), referring to some previous reports. It has been shown that the middle-age men are exactly typical peoples in Toyama Prefecture with a tendency making easily wrong mental condition under job and work place-privilaged social situations in continuing economic slump days, although they are not correctly categolized into the depression group. Combined with the peculiar property that the middleage men originally have a larger possibility to become depressive, this charachteristic seems to facilitate falling down into depressive feeling and finally intending suicide in severe cases. In light of these findings, it is suggested that construction of a substantial system for mental health care in the work places might be effective to prevent the suicide of middle-age men in Toyama Prefecture.
