Abstract

What is the main subject of Antonio Gramsci's Prison Notebooks? This work contains a large number of fragmental memoranda concerning his observationson various spheres. This paper argues that Prison Notebooks'subject consists of four areas of study and that it is proven by the analysis of Q1 plan, Q8 plan and some his letters from prison. These four areas incude the following: (1) history of Italian intellectuals, which is the central and comprehensive subject, (2) Americanism and Fordism, (3) philosophy, and (4) politics. They demonstrate a dual structure of argument, that is, the first two areas are empirical (or historical) studies, and the latter two areas are theoretical ones. In this sense, Gramsci succeedes in unifying empirical (or historical)and theoritical observations. 0n the other hand, one can point out that this construction is equivalent to the identity of philosophy-politics-history, which Gramsci repeatedly stresses in his Notebooks.
