Abstract

Through analysis of the life stories in Ingmar Bergman's movie "Wild Strawberry", the fundamental narrative structures are considered. 1) The diversity of selves: the old hero Isak meets alter egos at different stages of development. 2) The relationships of the hero and others: the young women have vital power to change the old hero. 3) The narrative structure and the meaning of the story: the story is narrated not from birth to death, but from death to re-birth. 4) The cycles of generations: communication with and care of the next generation is important in middle and old age. 5) The implicit theme: a significant theme is not anxiety in old age (the developmental stage of the leading actor), but the struggle and crisis in middle age (the developmental stage of the author).
