Gene expressions of bone and cartilage matrix protein during the ectopic hard tissue formation induced by BMP were investigated using in situ hybridization method. The gene expressions of type I and II as well as type X and osteocalcin, which is not able to be seen in normal chondral ossification, were observed in chondrocyte-like cells. The results indicate that chondrocyte-like cells in ectopic bone formation may have both characters of chondrocytes and osteoblasts.
