The composite of recombinant bone morphogenetic protein 2 (rhBMP-2) and type I atelocollagen fibers was implanted under the calvarial periosteum of wistar rats of 8 months old. Each composite was removed at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks after implantation, and evaluated histologically as an onlay bone graft substitute in a calvarial model. The results demonstrated that the composite of BMP and collagen was an effective material with osteoindtnctivity as an onlay bone graft substitute even in matured rats.
